And … goal! David Beckham has just scored the title for People magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive.’
Jimmy Kimmel orchestrated the reveal Tuesday night. A masked Beckham video conferenced in from London and sat for a lightning round of questions as audience members attempted to guess his identity.
The 40-year-old English Football Hall of Famer dethroned Huntsman heartthrob Chris Hemsworth, who received the accolade in 2014.
While early speculations pegged Beasts of No Nation actor Idris Elba, Jurassic World lead Chris Pratt and The Martian star Matt Damon as some of the top contenders, Beckham stealthily crept up on the competition.
But for those following the soccer dynamo's career, the announcement should come as little surprise.
Prior to his retirement in 2013, Beckham amassed 19 major trophies, became the first Englishman to win league titles in four countries, and played in three World Cups. He's launched his own H&M menswear collection, "Modern Essentials," and has maintained his sex icon status all while playing family man to posh fashion designer Victoria Beckham and their four children, Brooklyn, 16, Harper, 13, Cruz, 10, and Romeo, 4.
For the upcoming 'Sexiest Man Alive' issue (out Friday), Beckham told People that he hardly thinks of himself as a sex symbol, but that he was "pleased to accept" the title.
“It’s the best moment of my career," Beckham joked on Jimmy Kimmel Live! "I would obviously like to thank my parents for bringing me into this world, of course. I would like to thank my hairdresser, my stylist (and) Photoshop.”
Beckham will join the illustrious ranks of past honorees, including Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum and Adam Levine.
